Volek – Part I. Weight Loss. The most important and still under-cited study by Volek, et al. Very low carbohydrate ketogenic diet (VLCKD; %CHO:fat:protein = 12:59:28) Low-fat diet (LFD; = 56:24:20). Both diets led to a reduction in energy intake (~ 1504 kcal) but: • None of the subjects following the LFD lost as much weight as the average for VLCKD • Subjects following the VLCKD specifically reduced body fat and improved insulin sensitivity compared to LFD subjects.
